48 Earthquake Damage

**Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Shakes Northeast US** A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook buildings across parts of the US Northeast on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake struck at 10:20 am EST, with its epicenter located just outside New York City. Tremors were felt across the New York City region, including parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. According to Michigan Technological University, an earthquake of this magnitude is considered moderate and can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. However, no major damage or injuries have been reported at this time. The USGS indicates that the earthquake occurred on the Ramapo Fault, a previously unknown fault line near the city of Rye, New York. The fault is thought to be a remnant of a much larger fault that existed millions of years ago. Earthquakes are rare in the Northeast, but they do occur occasionally. In 1884, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake caused significant damage in upstate New York. The USGS is urging residents in the affected areas to be prepared for aftershocks, which can occur in the days and weeks following an earthquake.
