Amid a Great Sellers Market, the Giants Dumped Salary and Picked a Player Off the Scrap Heap

The Giants and Guardians are finalizing a trade that will send veteran right-hander Alex Cobb from San Francisco to Cleveland, sources told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Sunday. The Giants will receive minor league outfielder Gio Urshela in return.

Cobb, 35, is in the final year of a four-year, $56 million contract. He has a 4.02 ERA in 20 starts this season, with 101 strikeouts and 32 walks in 104 1/3 innings.

Urshela, 31, is a two-time Gold Glove winner who has played third base and shortstop in his career. He is batting .281 with six home runs and 41 RBIs in 88 games this season.

The Giants are rebuilding after finishing with a 107-55 record last season. They traded away several key players at the deadline, including Joc Pederson, Brandon Belt, and Kevin Gausman.

The Guardians are in contention for a wild-card spot. They are 58-54 this season and trail the first-place Twins by 3 1/2 games.
