Rwanda Asylum Plan Supreme Court

Supreme Court Upholds Ruling Against Rwanda Asylum Policy

Policy Leaves Asylum Seekers Vulnerable to Human Rights Breaches

Government's Policy in Disarray After Highest Court's Decision

The Supreme Court has upheld a Court of Appeal ruling that found the UK government's Rwanda asylum policy leaves people sent to Rwanda open to human rights breaches. The ruling has thrown the government's policy, which it says is needed to tackle small boat crossings, into disarray.

The legislation was supposed to override a Supreme Court ruling last year that deemed the plan to send asylum seekers to the African nation unlawful. The new law gave the government the power to send asylum seekers to other countries for processing and resettlement. However, the Supreme Court has now ruled that the new law is not compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

The government has said it is disappointed with the ruling and will consider its next steps. The ruling is likely to further delay the implementation of the Rwanda asylum policy, which has been criticized by human rights groups.

In a statement, the Refugee Council said: "This is a victory for the rule of law and for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. The government's Rwanda policy was a cruel and inhumane attempt to shirk our responsibilities to those seeking refuge in the UK."
