Alvaro Morata Gives Spain Early Lead And Niclas Fullkrugs Late Goal Rescues A Point For Germany

Spain breaks through, Germany rallies for 1-1 match

Alvaro Morata gives Spain early lead, and Niclas Fullkrug's late goal rescues a point for Germany

Spain held to a 1-1 draw by Germany in a closely contested Group E match at the FIFA World Cup 2022

Spain took an early lead in the eighth minute through a goal from Alvaro Morata. However, Niclas Fullkrug scored a late equalizer in the 83rd minute to rescue a point for Germany. The result leaves both teams with four points after two matches, with Japan leading the group on six points and Costa Rica at the bottom with zero points.

Spain had the better of the chances in the first half and should have been ahead by more at the break. Morata missed a glorious opportunity to double the lead just before halftime, and Germany keeper Manuel Neuer made a stunning save to deny Dani Olmo.

Germany came out stronger in the second half and pressed for an equalizer. They were rewarded for their efforts when Fullkrug fired home from close range after a mistake from Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The draw leaves both teams with work to do in their final group games. Spain will face Japan, while Germany will take on Costa Rica. Only the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout stages.
