Colin Farrell Launches Foundation for Son with Angelman Syndrome

Colin Farrell has launched a foundation in honor of his 20-year-old son, James, who has Angelman syndrome. The rare neurogenetic disorder causes developmental delays, intellectual disability, and speech impairment.

Farrell's Inspiration

Farrell told People Magazine that he was inspired to start the foundation after meeting other families affected by Angelman syndrome. He said, "I've met so many incredible families who are dealing with this, and I just wanted to do something to help."

What is Angelman Syndrome?

Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 15,000 people worldwide. It is caused by a deletion or mutation of the UBE3A gene on chromosome 15. Symptoms of Angelman syndrome can include:

  • Developmental delays
  • Intellectual disability
  • Speech impairment
  • Movement disorders
  • Seizures
